Katarina Wit started skating when she was age five. Her talent soon became obvious, and she gained entry into a school specifically designed for children with a talent to play sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. In this school, she met their coach Jutta Muller. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982, when she placed second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. From that moment on the elegance and grace of her skating caught everyone's attention. Her dominance began in this sport. Olympic success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for figure skating in women's after a fiercely contested contest. The victory she won four years earlier was a bit more tense. Her free skate was not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of her performances during both compulsory figures (short program) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt became the very first repeated winner in women's figure skating in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt had many successes in her acting career however, she returned to her sport in order to compete during the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. Although she didn't win a single medal, she was awed by fans even with her seventh place finish. The year 1995 was the year that Witt got inducted into World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
